Currently I am trying to get a liquor license for my wedding, so the LCBO and I are not on the greatest of terms. However, it seems that those gougers are trying to move back in to my better books by doing a little pro-environmental regulation. It seems that they will be forcing all wines on their shelves under $15 to be bottled in lightweight bottles, that is bottles weighing less than 420 grams. This regulation does not apply to sparkling wines, as the intense pressure of the carbonation (often between 90 and 120 psi) would shatter thinner glass.
This may not seem like much, but wines under $15 make up the majority of the products on the shelves at the LCBO so the impact of lighter bottles will be substantial. Eminent wine blogger Dr. Vino has a breakdown of the actual carbon footprint of wine and it will definitely give you some food (or drink, I suppose) for thought next time you are looking for wine. These regulations will go into effect January 1, 2013.
